  • What are the prices for adoptions?
    CATS/KITTENS: Adult cats (1 year and older) $120 Kittens (10 weeks-1 year) $150 2-"fur"-1 pricing is available DOGS/PUPPIES: Senior dogs (8+ years) $250 Adolescent dogs (3-7 years) $300 Young dogs (1-2 years) $400 Puppies (8 weeks-1 year) $500
  • Why do you charge adoption fees?
The adoption fee helps* covers the expense of a spay/neuter, minimum first vaccination bundle, FIV/FeLV testing for cats/kittens, and one de-wormer and flea treatment. This makes it a more convenient and affordable alternative for people who want to have pets. The Southwest Coast SPCA relies entirely on fundraisers, donations, and animal adoptions for income. By paying the adoption fee, we can rescue and help more animals! *The cost to spay/neuter, vaccinate, test and treat for pests exceeds $300 per cat/kitten. Your adoption fee helps offset the cost for our rescue.
  • Why does it sometimes cost more to adopt a female cat than a male?
A portion of the adoption fee covers the spay/neuter expense. Because the female spay is a more complicated surgery, it costs more to spay a female cat than to neuter a male. This causes the adoption prices of female cats to be more expensive than males.

  • How long do I have to wait to get a cat/dog?
Up to two weeks, with the exception of puppies and kittens. The time to process applications and adopt out will differ depending on the availability of our volunteers. We try our best to be as quick as possible! If you are adopting a kitten or puppy, you have to wait until they are at least 8 weeks old and spayed/neutered.
  • How do I adopt? What's the process?
Southwest Coast SPCA volunteers assist adopters with the selection of a companion animal suitable to their lifestyle. All persons wishing to adopt a dog/puppy or kitten/cat must complete a formal application. See the Applications section for more information. If your application is approved, a volunteer will contact you to set up a date and time for the adoption meet. All adopters must sign an adoption contract and abide by the conditions within. A passport with a record of treatments done at the vet's office is given to the adopter on the day the contract is signed. Adopters have a 3 month period post-adoption to return the animal if placement is unsatisfactory for any reason. During that 3 month period, the adopter is required to contact the SWC-SPCA if there are any issues and try to work through those issues with their support first. After that date the adoption is considered permanent and animals may not be accepted back into our care. We would make every effort to help an owner re-home their pet through social media and other avenues. All adopters must pay an adoption fee. (See prices under "What are the prices for adoptions?") SWC-SPCA reserves the right to refuse an adoption.
  • What are some general guidelines to adopting?
General rules: Age: Potential adopters must be at least 21 years of age. SWC-SPCA does not encourage animals to be adopted as surprise gifts. Cats and dogs will not be subjected to cosmetic surgery including but not limited to de-clawing, ear-cropping, tail-docking, or vocal cord clipping. Adopters in rental properties require permission from the landlord in order to be approved to adopt. Spay/Neuter: All animals will be spayed (females) or neutered (males) prior to adoption. Returning animal within 3 months post-adoption: SWC-SPCA adopts animals in good faith with adopters understanding we cannot guarantee health or temperament. If a problem comes up with the animal within the first 3 months, the adopter must contact the SWC-SPCA and try to work through the problem with their support. The adopter agrees that if for any reason within the first 3 months he/she cannot keep the animal it will be relinquished back to the SWC-SPCA. In the event that the animal needs to be returned, he/she must make arrangements with the SWC-SPCA for the return, recognizing that because of limited space, the return may not happen immediately. Adoption fees are non-refundable. Cats cannot be returned directly to the shelter.

  • Why aren't there kittens at the shelter?
Often times we do not have many kittens in the shelter. Disease control and space limitations play a role in this. Kittens are too small to be vaccinated and often carry respiratory viruses when they are first rescued. It is ideal to have them separated from adult cats to prevent these viruses from spreading. Additionally, our shelter has limited space. Kittens are much easier to place in foster care than adults.
  • Why aren't there dogs at the shelter?
Our shelter has limited indoor space to house dogs. When we do house them, we try to have a foster home lined up within a day or two. Rescue dogs often come untrained and benefit being in a home setting to become ready for adoption.
  • Are your animals spayed/neutered?
Yes, all dogs/puppies and cats/kittens are spayed or neutered before they are adopted. Our goal is to control the unwanted population of animals which starts with the spay/neuter of all animals rescued by or relinquished to us. With puppies and kittens, we may offer a Foster-to-Adopt option. The adopter can take home the pet who remains under the care of the Southwest Coast SPCA until spayed or neutered. If you choose this option, there is a separate, detailed contract to sign. The day of the spay or neuter, the adopter will sign the official adoption contract.
  • What happens to animals that are rescued by the SWC-SPCA?
IMPORTANT: DO NOT DROP ANIMALS OFF AT THE SHELTER. Stray animals may have infections or diseases that can contaminate the animals that are already at the shelter. 1. If the animal has an obvious injury or is in distress, a vet visit will be made as soon as possible. 2. If the animal is deemed to be adoptable: an intake form will be filled out the animal will be treated for fleas/ticks and worms they will be kept isolated from other animals for 7-14 days to avoid spreading disease a vet appointment will be made for a general check-up, spay/neuter check and cats will have FIV/FeLV testing done adoptable animals will be spayed/neutered and vaccinated 3. If the animal is a part of a TNR program, please refer to the TNR policy.
  • What happens to animals obtained by the Animal Control Officer?
Animals will be assessed at the pound and taken into custody of the SWC-SPCA after three days*. The regular intake procedure will then take place and the animal will be put up for adoption when ready. With the exception of feral cats who are unable to be tamed, please view the TNR policy. *The Town of Stephenville's policy is that owners have three days in which to claim their pet. After that time, the animal is put into the care of the SWC-SPCA.
  • What does the SWC-SPCA do with stray animals?
Stray animals will not be turned away. We will first post a photo to our Facebook page of the animal with the location of sighting for 5 days. If no owner claims the animal in these 5 days, we can form a plan of rescue. This can take up to a few weeks if we are at full capacity in shelter and foster homes. In the event that our shelter is at capacity, we will try to work with other rescue organizations to find a place for the animal.
  • Can owners surrender their pets?
Yes, we take in surrendered pets but as a rescue group, our priority is the stray, homeless and/or injured animals. That being said, we will encourage the owner, and support their efforts, to place the animal as an outside adoption. We will work with them to: Post the animal to our Facebook page and any other resources we have at the time to help them find the animal a new home. (AKA: "Courtesy posting") If a new home cannot be found with a reasonable/required time we will accept the animal into our care if we have space and resources available. A surrender document must be signed and a surrender fee paid.
  • What happens after a RCMP confiscates an animal?
All RCMP confiscated animals will be taken in and assessed via the pound (or other isolation location). IMPORTANT: RCMP animals will not be advertised or spayed/neutered until they are cleared and ownership is given to the SWC-SPCA. If the animal is assessed as suitable for adoption they may be transferred to the shelter or foster care if space allows. If the animal is cleared for return to their original owner we will follow RCMP instructions and return the animal as soon as possible.
  • How does the SWC-SPCA deal with pregnant female animals?
Any pregnant females are considered the most vulnerable and given priority for housing and care. In order to take in pregnant females, we must have foster space. If the pet is a stray, we intake as soon as possible once a foster is secured, so long as the animal is not feral. If the animal is feral, we must wait for the kittens to be born and wait for them to be 8 weeks of age before trapping and separating from mom. Mom will then be trapped, neutered and released (TNR) back to her home given she has a caretaker to provide food/shelter. If there is no caretaker, a barn home will be arranged. If the pet is owned, we ask the owner to keep mom and kittens inside until they are 8 weeks of age. At this time, we will remove the kittens and place them into our care. Mom cat will then be spayed (at a discounted cost to the owner) as soon as she finishes lactating. This can take up to 2-3 weeks once separated from her kittens.
  • What happens to animals under the Trap Neuter Release (TNR) program?
Animals taken in temporarily under our TNR program will be kept in isolation at the pound (or other isolation) until they are spayed/neutered. The animals will then be released back to their colony and caretaker. (Refer to our TNR program policy for more information.) Any adoptable animals or kittens that are deemed non-feral will be transferred out of the TNR program and will be handled as per our regular in-take policy.
  • How does the SWC-SPCA determine adoptions?
We do our best to ensure that all animals are placed in loving, stable and lifelong homes suited to the animal. Upon an adoption meet, there must be a connection between the pet and the owner. The physical, emotional, and behavioural needs of the animal must be met in the new home and is considered first and foremost when placing animals out for adoption.
  • What is the TNR (Trap, Neuter, Release) program?
TNR (Trap, Neuter, Release) programs aim to reduce the number of stray and feral cats by removing their ability to reproduce. They are humanely trapped, spayed/neutered and released back to their home.
  • What is the procedure of TNR (Trap, Neuter, Release)?
Cats and surrounding environment are assessed Do they appear to be stray or feral? Are there kittens and/or nursing mothers? Are there ill or injured cats? Plan ahead for the care to be provided after trapping. No animals are removed during this initial assessment unless it is an emergency situation. Communicate with the caretaker the condition of the animals and suspected outcome. Arrange trapping, withholding food (not water) for 24 hours in advance, so that they will be more likely to enter a trap to get food. Animals taken in temporarily under our TNR program will be kept in isolation at the pound until they are spayed/neutered. Their ear will be tipped to show they have been spayed or neutered already so future rescuers and other community members do not have to re-trap. The animals will then be released back to their colony and caretaker. Cats found suffering with terminal or untreatable illnesses or injuries are humanely euthanized. Any adoptable animals or kittens that are deemed non-feral may be transferred out of the TNR program and will be handled as per our regular intake policy. Once TNR is complete, the SWC-SPCA will maintain contact with the colony caretaker to ensure success of the program. Any new animals that appear at the TNR site will be handled immediately as funds allow. A waiting list will be compiled and colonies will be handled based upon urgency, number in residence, available resources and anticipated outcome for the colony.
  • I found a lost/stray animal. What should I do?
IMPORTANT: DO NOT DROP ANIMAL OFF AT THE SHELTER. Stray animals may have infections or diseases that can contaminate the animals that are already at the shelter. Collect as much information as possible, and private message the SWC-SPCA on our Facebook page or phone 709-214-1750. If you live in Stephenville, Port au Port East, Stephenville Crossing, St. George's or Shallop Cove, please call the Municipal Officer who handles animal control at 709-643-8360. Look for identification: Are they wearing a collar and/or tag? These usually have the animal's home number or address. Location: Where did you find it? Appearance: What type of breed does it look like? Colour? Any unique features? Take pictures and/or videos of the animal. Search the neighborhood: Is there anyone around who may know more information? Contact us or animal control with this information. We will share a courtesy post to our Facebook page and try our best to find the owner of the animal. If no owner comes forward in 3-5 days, the animal can come into our care once a rescue plan is in place.
  • What if the lost/stray animal is not approachable?
Consider your own safety first. If the animal appears unapproachable, do not attempt to catch it. Call your local Animal Control (643-8360) or RCMP (643-2118). NOTE: Animal Control serves people in Stephenville/Port aux Port East/Stephenville Crossing/St. George’s/Shallop Cove areas.
  • I lost my pet, what do I do?
Contact us ASAP - we may already have a missing pet post online. If not, we can do a post for you if you private message us with a picture of your pet, where it was lost and your contact information so people can call you if they see your pet. SPCA Policy on Stray Animals: Within the Animal Health and Protection Act, a Branch of SPCA NL is required to hold a stray dog or cat for a minimum of 5 days before placing the animal up for adoption. Owners have 5 days to reclaim their lost pet. After the 5 days, the animal is under the care of the SWC-SPCA and will be put up for adoption. Please note: Different rules apply if the animal is picked up by the Town of Stephenville.
  • Can you take my pet?
It's very unlikely, but we will do our best to help re-home! The SPCA is primarily a rescue group, meaning that owned pets are lowest on our priority list. We will help you look for a new home by posting information about your pet on our Facebook and Instagram pages. See more under "What is a courtesy post?".
  • What do I do if I come across a wildlife related problem?
Call a conservation officer in St. Georges at 709-886-2790 or Corner Brook at 709 637-2922.
  • What do I do if I witness an animal being abused?
If you notice that an animal is not being properly treated, please get some pictures and/or videos of the animal and call the RCMP at 643-2118. If you are concerned about your safety, you can also call Crime Stoppers. The police are the only ones who have the power to investigate and legally go onto the property. They will check out the situation. If they feel the animal is in trouble, they will remove it from the home and put it under our care. If the animal is loose and wandering around your property and you live in the Stephenville/Port au Port East/Stephenville Crossing/St. George’s/Shallop Cove area, you can call the Town of Stephenville at 643-8360 to have the animal picked up by the Municipal Officer. Once they have the animal they will contact us to assess the animal.
  • What is a courtesy post?
Courtesy posts are made by us on our Facebook page when someone is looking to re-home their pet and we have no space to shelter them. We also do courtesy posts for people who have lost their pet or found someone else's. We are a rescue-based shelter and owned pets are low on our intake priority list. We try our best to help by sharing or re-posting the animal's information to our Facebook page of animal lovers to increase the chances of success.
  • How do I get the Southwest Coast SPCA to make a courtesy post for me?
Option 1 Contact us: If you are looking for help in getting your pet rehomed, send us pictures and/or videos of the animal giving as many details about your pet as you can such as: - Personality (outgoing, shy, independent, cuddly, playful, etc.) - Do they get along with children/other cats or dogs, etc). - Are they spayed/neutered? - How old are they? Make sure you give us your contact information so people can contact you if they are interested in adopting your pet. The more information you give us, the better post we can do! If your pet is lost, send us a picture, the area the pet was lost, and your contact information so people can call you if they see your pet. Option 2 Repost: Create a detailed post yourself including the above-noted information, Send us the link to the post (1. Click the post time-stamp, 2. copy link url, 3. send to us) NOTE: We do not screen any adopters prior to them contacting you. It is up to you to use your best judgement when placing your pet in a new home. Some important questions to ask inquiring adopters: If you rent your home, have you asked your landlord if you can have an animal? If you have other pets, how do you plan to introduce the new pet to your current pets? Do you have funds to provide the pet with emergency vet care? Do you plan to let the pet outside?

Tax receipts are also available at the shelter.
  • What kind of supplies do you need/accept?
It is best if you contact us to find out what our specific needs are before purchasing items to donate. In general, we always need: Hardwood pellets (the type that is used in pellet stoves) because we use them as kitty litter at our shelter. These can be purchased year round at Canadian Tire. Wet and dry cat/kitten food, specifically Friskies, Purina, Whiskas and Fancy Feast brands. Cleaning supplies such as bleach, non-latex gloves, hand sanitizer, floor cleaner, Lysol wipes, pet wipes, and paper towels. We are fortunate to have limited amounts of dogs in our care and dog donations last quite awhile.
